This is a finely executed 19th century portrait miniature depicting Lola Montez, a well known dancer, actress, and cultural figure of the mid 1800s.
Lola Montez was born Marie Dolores Eliza Rosanna Gilbert in 1821 and became internationally famous during the 1840s. She is best known for her relationship with King Ludwig I of Bavaria, a highly publicized scandal that contributed to his abdication in 1848. Her likeness circulated widely during her lifetime in portraits, prints, and miniatures, reflecting early celebrity culture rather than private commission.
The portrait is signed, with the signature beginning with the letter S, and the reverse retains a period label reading “Lola Montez n. J. Stieler” and “painted on genuine ivory.” Johann Joseph Stieler was a prominent 19th century German portrait painter known for his depictions of notable figures, including Lola Montez. Based on the signature, labeling, materials, and stylistic execution, the miniature is attributed to Johann Joseph Stieler. Full authorship cannot be confirmed without external documentation.
The miniature is housed in a geometric frame composed of ivory segments bordered by a tortoiseshell-toned surround, with a gilt oval bezel. Its scale and presentation make it well suited for shelf styling, wall display, or inclusion in a cabinet or vignette.
