Bronze Bust of Ajax the Great, Likely Antique

Bronze Bust of Ajax the Great, Likely Antique

SOLD ARCHIVE

A likely antique bronze bust depicting Ajax the Great, the legendary Greek warrior of the Trojan War celebrated for his strength and valor in Homer’s Iliad. The figure turns dynamically to one side, his expression fierce and resolute beneath a crested helmet adorned with relief battle scenes of horsemen and warriors in motion.

This sculpture reflects the neoclassical fascination with ancient heroism, portraying Ajax as both noble and human—a symbol of loyalty, courage, and tragic honor. The fine modeling of the beard, drapery folds, and musculature speaks to the refined craftsmanship typical of 19th-century Continental bronzes. Mounted on a stepped metal base with a warm gilt finish, the piece carries the weight and dignity of classical antiquity reinterpreted through a Romantic lens.
