Marie de Medici, Queen Consort of France
Marie de Medici, Queen Consort of France
SOLD ARCHIVE
An 18th/19th-century Continental School oil on canvas portrait depicting Marie de Medici (1575–1642), Queen Consort of France and wife of King Henry IV. She later served as regent for her son, Louis XIII, and became one of the most influential women of her era. A devoted patron of the arts, she famously commissioned the Marie de Medici Cycle from Peter Paul Rubens, now displayed in the Louvre.
The sitter wears an Elizabethan-style gown with a lace ruff collar, jeweled bodice, and pearl accents, paired with a pearl and ruby headpiece that underscores her royal stature. Her serene expression and balanced composition reflect the Continental School’s admiration for regal portraiture and its emphasis on historical subjects during the 18th and 19th centuries.
