What is a Grand Tour intaglio?

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Grand Tour was a post-university rite of passage for Europe’s elite. Travelers visited major cultural sites to deepen their education in art, language, and history. Since photography didn’t exist yet, intaglio artists were hired to create small, detailed engravings as keepsakes from each stop—often collected in books to show friends and family back home as proof of the journey.
